Information about film applicators
In almost every laboratory as well as research & development and quality control departments of the automotive, adhesives, plastic or foils industry film applicators are used.
The big advantage of the film applicators is that they can apply the coating quickly and easily on a substrate to be coated. The film thickness is always the same, which leads to good reproducibility. For example, a manual application with a pneumatic air gun is much more complicated compared to the application with a film applicator.
The principle of a film applicator is always the same. It has a long gap (for example 6 or 8 cm), which is specified as film width and the gap has a specific height, which indicates the film thickness. Film applicators are available for all kind of film thicknesses. Film thicknesses between 20 and 500 µm are common.
For any desired wet film thickness the film applicator with the corresponding gap height has to be used. Therefore, new geometries were invented to apply different film thicknesses with only one film applicator.
The four-sided film applicator enjoys large popularity. Every side (four in total) of its cuboid design has different gap height (for example 50, 100, 150 and 200 µm). So four different wet film thicknesses can be applied with it.
The adjustable film applicator is also very clever. Using the two adjusting screws the gap height can be varied between 0 and 10.000 µm (in 10 µm steps). This film applicator works well if the requirements constantly demand different film thicknesses.
Application: the coating is put on the substrate and applied by moving the film applicator over the substrate. It can be done manually or, even better, with an automatic film applicator. The result is a film of the desired wet film thickness (due to the used gap height). The solid, the levelling and the wet film thickness are the main factors for the film thickness in cured state.
In quality control automatic film applicators are used more and more for a better constant quality. There are also machines with a vacuum bed or even with a heated vacuum bed. For every application there is a matching machine. The reproducibility is always the same, no matter who is the operator.
