Pencil Hardness Tester
Description:
The pencil hardness tester meets the requirements of ISO 15184 and ASTM D3363. In order to determine the hardness of a coating material, pencils of different degrees of hardness are pulled across a dry paint film with certain pressure as a pass / fail test (the surface should be as smooth as possible). The angle between the pencil and the painted surface is 45 °. The scratch resistance of the paint corresponds to the hardness of the softest pencil which has carved it. Defects are defined as plastic deformations, cohesive fracture or combination of both.
Technical specifications:
– Pressure on the pencil tip: 500 g
– Force of (4,91 +/- 0,15) N on the surface
– Angle between pencil and painted surface: 45 °
Hardness:
– Pencils: Pencil Set of Mitsubishi (20 pieces from 9B to 9H)
– Abrasive paper, grit No. 400
Softer to Harder:
9B-8B-7B–6B–5B–4B–3B–2B–B–Hb–F–H–2H–3H–4H–5H–6H-7H-8H-9H
Note:
For comparative testing, it is recommended that pencils from the same manufacturer be used.
Variations might be found between manufacturers and between batches from the same manufacturer.
